Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the U.S., and much of it revolves around the workplace. The federal government has taken a stand by passing the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act and the Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act. But employers must react similarly by erecting legal defenses, including safeguarding personnel files that contain such information as employees' Social Security numbers, as prescribed by many state statutes.
